What is Montessori?
Montessori is a method of teaching practiced in over 20,000 schools worldwide. It is a flexible, fluid method of teaching, characterized by independance and a respect for the child’s natural development. This method allows our teachers to tailor lessons to each individual student, so that the child’s learning experience is determined by his or her unique abilities and interests. While each Montessori school slightly varies in its classroom structure, Charleston Montessori uses the following practices:
- Mixed age classrooms
- Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options
- Uninterrupted blocks of work time
- A constructivist or “discovery” model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction
- Specialized educational materials developed nationally and by and our own faculty
