CMS Spring Hike Series 2014

Charleston Montessori’s annual community hike series begins April 2, 2014, on the Sunrise Trail!  Mark your calendar and grab your walking shoes.  Hikes are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  

2014 LIFE’S A HIKE… ONE TRAIL AT A TIME

CHARLESTON MONTESSORI SCHOOL

 Hike 1: Sunrise Carriage Trail,  Wednesday, April 2 at 1 p.m.

The Sunrise Carriage Trail is located in the South Hills section of Charleston.  Parking is available across from the law firm of Farmer, Cline & Campbell.  The hike will begin at the Myrtle Road entrance.  The trail surface is gravel and has some steep sections.  Vickie McLaughlin, Old Colony Realtors, is sponsoring this hike and the community partner is the YWCA.

 Hike 2: Willy Shuman WAS Trail, Saturday, April 5 at 10:30 a.m.

The Willy Shuman WAS (Wear A Seatbelt) Trail is located behind George Washington High School.  Parking is at George Washington High school and the trail head is behind the school above the baseball field.  The trail surface is mulch.  Commercial Insurance Services is sponsoring this hike and the community partner is WAS.

 Hike 3: Pier-to-Pier & Magic Island, Wednesday, April 9 at 12 p.m.

This hike begins at Charleston Montessori School, 805 Price Street (Washington Street, West to Greendale Drive to Price Street). Hike visits the Peer to Pier project along Kanawha Boulevard and ends at Magic Island.  This hike will be on sidewalks and is just over one mile one-way.  The community partner is Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.

 Hike 4: Alice Knight Trail at Coonskin Park Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m.

The Alice Knight Trail at Coonskin Park entrance is adjacent to the first large parking area on the right across from a large field and playground after entering the park.  This is a challenging trail but a beautiful one!  There are sections of the trail that are narrow, rocky and depending on the weather, wet.  Proper hiking shoes/boots are recommended.  There is a waterfall about halfway into this trail. Kanawha Valley Radiology is the sponsor for this hike and Kanawha Trail Club is the community sponsor.

 Hike 5: Choose Your Own Adventure!  Spring Break Week (April 14-18)

The fifth hike occurs during Spring Break.  At home or away, find time to hike a trail!  Ideas for local and regional hikes will be posted on the Charleston Montessori School Facebook site. ZMM Architects & Engineers are the sponsors of Choose Your Own Adventure and Goodwill Industries is the community partner.

Hike 6 : Kanawha City Bike Trail, Saturday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m.

Parking is located on 57th Street toward the river off MacCorkle Ave. S.E. in Kanawha City.  This trail follows Kanawha Avenue to the University of Charleston and loops back.  Participants may choose to loop back at any earlier point.  This hike is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.  The community partner for this hike is Read Aloud West Virginia.

 Hike 7: Charly Jupiter Hamilton Mural, Wednesday, April 23 at 12 p.m.

Hike from Charleston Montessori (805 Price Street) to the new Charly Jupiter Hamilton mural on Washington Street and back.  Gaddy Engineering sponsors today’s hike and the community partner is the Boys & Girls Club.


Hike 8 : Chilton Trail, Saturday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m.

The Chilton Trail is a newly developed trail located in South Hills. There is limited parking at the trailhead located on Louden Heights Road, across from Wild Acre Road.  Additional parking will be at St. Matthews located on Bridge Road next to Exxon with shuttles to the trailhead.  The terrain is natural forest floor and has several foot bridges.  The trail loops and is less than a mile long.  J.Q. Dickinson Salt Works sponsors today’s hike and the community partner is Habitat for Humanity/ReStore.


Hike 9: Kanawha Boulevard, National Walk at Lunch Day, Wednesday, April 30

Today’s hike coincides with National Walk at Lunch Day.  The hike is from the South Side Bridge to the Capitol and back (or a shorter distance on the route).  This hike is wheelchair and stroller-friendly.  BrickStreet Insurance sponsors today’s hike and the community partner is Covenant House.

Hike 10: CCC Snipe Trail at Kanawha State Forest, Saturday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m.

This interpretive trail starts at the group camp area behind the pool and ends at Shrewsbury Hollow Road and Mossy Rock Trail. It is 3/4 mile and is rated easy. The path is paved and is stroller-friendly, and there is a small playground and picnic area.  KEYS for Healthy Kids is the community partner.
